What’s the weather like in Turkey in January?
January is winter in Turkey, and the weather can be quite cold throughout the country. However, the climate in Turkey varies depending on the region. While the coastal areas experience milder temperatures, the interior parts and higher elevations are usually colder.
Average daily temperatures
The average daily temperatures in Turkey in January range from around 4°C (39°F) to 12°C (54°F). As mentioned earlier, the coastal regions, especially in the south, tend to have higher temperatures, with averages ranging from 8°C (46°F) to 15°C (59°F). Meanwhile, the inland areas and higher altitudes, such as Cappadocia and the northeast, can be much colder, often dropping below freezing.
Sunshine and rainfall
January is typically a rainy month in Turkey, especially in the western and northern regions. Istanbul, for example, receives about 125 millimeters (5 inches) of rainfall during this month. However, the eastern parts of the country, such as Antalya and the Mediterranean coast, tend to have drier conditions with little rainfall.
Despite the rain, there are still a few hours of sunshine per day, ranging from 3 to 6 hours on average. The southern coastal areas receive more sun, while the northern regions see less sunlight during this time of the year.
