What’s the weather like in Sri Lanka in December?

In December, Sri Lanka experiences its Northeast monsoon season, which brings cooler and wetter weather to the island. Despite this, December is still a popular time for tourists to visit due to its relatively mild temperatures and stunning natural beauty. While it may not be the ideal time for beach activities, December offers a unique experience with lush green landscapes and amazing cultural festivals.

Average daily temperatures

During December, Sri Lanka enjoys pleasant temperatures ranging from around 25°C (77°F) in coastal areas to cooler temperatures of 18°C (64°F) in hilly regions. The central highlands and hill stations like Nuwara Eliya experience even colder temperatures, often dropping to around 10°C (50°F) at night. It is advisable to pack some warm clothing if you plan to visit these areas during your trip.

Sunshine and rainfall

December marks the beginning of the monsoon season in the northeast of Sri Lanka, resulting in an increase in rainfall. The eastern and northern parts of the island receive more rainfall compared to the drier southwestern coast. However, despite the increase in rainfall, Sri Lanka still sees an average of 6 to 7 hours of sunshine per day in December, providing ample opportunity for exploration and sightseeing.
