What’s the weather like in Sri Lanka in May?
In May, Sri Lanka experiences the beginning of its monsoon season, with varying weather conditions across the country. The southwest monsoon typically sets in around mid-May, bringing heavy rainfall and strong winds to the southwestern coastal areas, including popular tourist destinations like Colombo, Galle, and Negombo. On the other hand, the eastern and northern parts of Sri Lanka receive very little rainfall during this time.
Average Daily Temperatures
The temperature in Sri Lanka during May is generally hot and humid, with average daily temperatures ranging from 28°C (82°F) to 32°C (90°F) in most parts of the country. However, higher elevations in places like Nuwara Eliya and Ella may experience slightly cooler temperatures, ranging from 17°C (62°F) to 24°C (75°F).
Sunshine and Rainfall
May is characterized by a decrease in sunshine hours due to the approaching monsoon season. Coastal areas usually see around 6 to 7 hours of sunshine per day. However, the southwest monsoon brings heavy rainfall to these regions, with an average of 200 to 300mm (8 to 12 inches) of precipitation. The eastern and northern parts of Sri Lanka, which are not affected by the southwest monsoon, experience much lesser rainfall, with an average of only 50 to 100mm (2 to 4 inches) during May.
